Lyons Studio July News Flash!

NEW CUB PAINTING IS REVEALED!!

Due to overwhelming response, we decided to show you Sam’s just-finished painting.

What do you think?
Can hear the call of the birds and the gentle whoosh of their wings? Do you feel the heaviness of the Florida air? Take a breath … can you smell the slightly musky, earthy scent of the lush tropical greenery? And how about the gator? Can you spot her? (We’ll warn you; she’s hungry.)

That’s the view Sam and Mindy have from their Lakeland backyard. Unfortunately a gorgeous Cub float plane does not sit by their dock. They don’t even have a dock … yet. But that’s the beauty of artistic license. A scene doesn’t really have to exist in order for Sam to paint it.

Aviation Art by Sam LyonsCredit for the Cub on floats goes to Mike Tegtmeier of Watertown, Wisconsin. He’s a longtime customer and devoted Cub fan. He sent us a photo of his friend’s Cub on floats (at left) several years ago. Patience pays off. When Sam was searching for a pretty float plane to put in his new painting, he discovered the Cub in his files.

We did give Mike a first look at the painting and his reaction was immediate. “It looks AWESOME,” he emailed.  “I love it! I’m glad my photo inspired him.”

HERE'S A LOOK AT THE PAINTING IN PROGRESS!

Sam usually paints the airplane first during the process of creating a painting.

Sam then masks off the airplane to protect it once he starts the background.

It's amazing how a painting develops. The tiniest detail is important.

Name the Painting Contest at Oshkosh!
As we mentioned in last month’s News Flash, there will be a “Name the Painting” contest at the upcoming EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. We’ve done this type of contest before and it’s been greeted with great enthusiasm.

The dates of the show are July 26 through August 1. You have to submit the painting titles in person at Oshkosh. Each person can submit two names. Official entry forms will be available at the Lyons Studio Booth.

AOPA showKeep in mind that we are in a different booth this year.  Sam and Mindy will still be in Building B but our booth number is 2028. It’s just two booths away from where you usually see us. We’ll still be next to the CH Products display but on the other side. CH Products is where you can play with flight simulators so there’s usually a good crowd there.

Sam and Mindy decided to downsize a bit this year and have a smaller booth like the one we had at the AOPA show in 2005.That's our younger selves in the photo.

There will still be plenty to see and buy.  More importantly you can submit your names for the new print. If you’re name is judged the winner, you will receive a Limited Edition print as reward.

Get creative and we’ll see you at Oshkosh!

Talk About an Original!!
Here’s a photo of the actual original acrylic painting. No wonder Sam is smiling.
Aviation art by Sam LyonsIt’s hanging in Sam and Mindy’s Lakeland house before it makes the trip to Oshkosh. It’s the first picture people see when they come into the house and Mindy can see it from her office. What a view!

We are hoping to find a permanent home for the painting. The 36” x 30 framed work of art needs a place where it will be loved and admired. The only maintenance it requires is the occasional “oohing” and “aahhing” over its beauty. It loves when company comes to visit and gushes about the way the light plays on the water and trees. Compliments on the incredible details are also appreciated. If the new owner is a Cub pilot, that’s great but it’s not a must.

Really the only absolute must is a willingness to pay the price. And that would be $9,000. Yes, it costs more than a puppy but it will be in the family for generations and won’t chew your slippers.

NEWS FLASH UPDATE: AS OF JULY 20, THE ORIGINAL IS SOLD! CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW OWNERS!

 Parting Shot ...

All of the Lyons’ kitties have their own talents. Here Amelia shows off her ability to touch her nose with her tongue. Hey, when you’re that adorable, you don’t need to do much more than that.
